»A great product manager has the brain of an engineer, the heart of a designer, and the speech of a diplomat.« – Deep Nishar.
The Product Manager (PM) is responsible for the viability of the product in development. This role makes sure that the team shares a vision regarding the problem to be solved. It starts with identifying possible target groups and driving the problem interviews. PMs are responsible for the product's progress, but also ensure that the major risks have been eliminated before the engineers start building it – through lean experiments and excessive usability testing.
Manage the team
In our agile product development team you work at the intersection between business and technology. Thriving for the best user experience while considering technical constraints happens in close collaboration with designers and engineers.
Manage the product
Together you envision the product, which requires you to research your customers and their problems. During the project, you will define and iterate the product as you go. You ensure that your users receive value. Along the journey, you solve problems as they pop up and closely manage scope so that the right solution is shipped on time.
Manage the stakeholders
In addition, the product managers take care of the stakeholders. They ensure that the stakeholders - in our case primarily the representatives of the companies and challenge providers - are sufficiently involved in the development process and that the product is aligned with the company's goals and constraints.
In order to fulfill all these tasks, a product manager must have diverse skills. These are above all strategic thinking, management & coordination, and communication. But how do I learn all this and become a good product manager?
The answer: experience matters!
For sure, a degree in business, marketing, or especially engineering can be helpful for a career in product management. And there are many online courses and books out there that can help you develop the necessary knowledge. But no suprise: practicing the knowledge is key!
Beyond theory, you need to practice working with diverse people from different backgrounds, forming and developing them into a team. There is a lot to read about agile methods, Kanban, Scrum, story maps or Lean Canvas in books, but the true value comes with the art of implementation.
